Four men meet up at the urinals in a restaurant mens room - and clash over politics, inequality, physical attributes and the meaning of masculinity... and life.
Why this play?
The play was written for an overnight festival at Sacred Fools Theatre Company in Los Angeles - I had randomly received two phrases that had to be included, and a cast of 4 men. I had the impulse to write about four men in a men's room, and the opening line being "I got a raw deal" as one of them looks down at his junk. A little raunchy, but perfect for a New Year's Eve play festival! The rest of the play was hammered out in an overnight frenzy to be ready for the actors to start learning their lines at eight the next morning, and I have made almost no changes since then - it's a little raw, but the energy of it works.
Gentlemen premiered on New Year's Eve, December 31st 2016, at The Sacred Fools Theater in Los Angeles as part of their Fifty Second Fast & Loose Overnight Plays Festival. It also received a staged reading in Homer, Alaska at the Pier One Theatre in 2017, and was produced at The Acorn Theatre in Three Oaks, MI and in Brisbane, Australia at the Short + Sweet Festival in 2018.
